A Star In A Village!
A 9 year girl shows up late to the village government school, once again. The newly joined Physical Training Instructor (PTI) at the school asks her to take a run around the school grounds, as a form of punishment. While she is running, the PTI notices some sort of even pacing through-out her run. He puts her in the school Kho-Kho team. She starts excelling, and by the time she completes her 8th grade at the school, she has played at many state level competitions. Along with many girls of her village, she joins the high school in a nearby village. She completed highschool becoming the only student there to play in Nationals, not only once but thrice!
As Param narrated the story sitting at her home in village 6NZP-D (yup, that's how village names are drawn along with the canal system!) in the border District of SriGanganagar, you could see what may have caused her to get late to school. With mental health and alcoholism in the family, even at a young age, she took responsibility for house chores, animals, and cooking. But now, she shared her story along with a line of medals and certificates adorning walls of her newly constructed PM Awaas Yojna house.
Later that evening, her PTI Prithvi called to say ‘Param is a diamond! You don't see kids like her’. His dream was to see her go to the college he studied at for his Diploma in Physical Education. The only Government college in Rajasthan to teach that course, it was highly competitive and expensive (due to the lack of hostels at the campus). Param cleared the admission criteria making it among the 400 students to appear for the physical test. When the final admissions list was declared, she stood 17th amid the 50 students selected for the program! Her PTI almost cried.
And the family who made her dream come true is Rahul Abrol & Tanya! Rahul & Tanya grew up in India, have had passion to help young kids be successful, and currently live and work in Singapore! They extended Hamari Laado’s Giving Circle by sponsoring Param’s college fee as well as the cost of two years of stay. Their generosity helped Param to continue to excel and shine!
We are confident that Param’s success will inspire and enable many girls in her village and community to become stars themselves!
We welcome your support to see another star shine from Rural India! Write to us and expand Hamari Laado’s Giving Circle!
Change, one girl at a time! 😊
